Based in the remote village of Karnataka, the people there follow the questionable and old tradition of Devdasi, where young girls are offered for service to the goddess Yelamma. They are made to stay at the temple where the pundits, Landlords and others take advantage of them. A cruel and manipulative man named Verappan then takes these girls and sells them at brothels in Bombay. This cruelty has been going on for years and finally Bhasya and his wife Hanumi decide to stop the injustice by saving a girl named Laxmi. The couple will also have to fight off the powerful forces of Desai.
The film is directed and produced by T S Ranga. The music is composed by B V Karanth. The cinematography is by Ko Hung Chiang. The star cast includes Om Puri, Smita Patil, Nana Patekar, Naseeruddin Shah and Vijay Kashyap.
