Set during the Bangladesh partition in 1971, two orpans Bikram, played by Ranveer Singh and Bala, played by Arjun Kapoor are hopeless and lost. They happen to meet Lateef, played by Pankaj Tripathi, who offers them food, but in exchange they will have to help him in smuggling guns. They agree and here on starts their wild journey. One of Lateef’s clients, an army officer, asks for one of the boys to be kept as his sex slave or he has to give up his daughter. In a state of panic he agrees but the boys kill him.

Not seeing any hope they flee to Calcutta where they start pilfering coal to get some easy and extra cash. They start looting coal trains and selling it. With the coal business flourishing, they start laundering money in other businesses as well and build charitable schools, hospitals and donating money. They become the modern robin hoods but the law is fast to catch up and inspector Satyajeet, played by Irrfan Khan is put on their case to nab them.

Bala and Bikram are later invited to a new club opening and there they meet Nandita, played by Priyanka Chopra, a cabaret dancer and fall in love with her. Later they all three go to watch a movie but Bala gets into a scuffle with a guy and kills him. Bikram pleads him to leave or he will get into trouble. He leaves Calcutta but Satyajeet promises to kill him if he’s back. Nandita tells Bikram she loves him and on learning this Bala comes back to Calcutta and shoots at Bikram but accidentally shoots Nandita, she is hospitalized but survives.

Bikram and Bala go their separate ways. Nandita tells Bikram that she cannot marry him unless he gives up the life of crime and he agrees.
