Based in Gujarat, a young man named Gurukanth, played by Abhishek Bachchan, dreams of making it big some day but his dad has no hope that his dreams will ever come true. Nevertheless, Guru goes to Turkey and enters spice trading and is successful and promoted but he refuses the job as he wants to be self employed. He later marries Sujata, played by Aishwarya Rai from his village especially since she brings in big dowry. Guru, Sujata and her brother Jignesh all move to Bombay where he gets into cloth trading and sets up his business there naming it Shakti Corporation.

 

Manik Dasgupta, aka Nanaji, played by Mithun Chakraborty runs a newspaper called Swatantra and is close to Guru. HE treats him as his son and supports him during his early days in Bombay. As Guru’s business grows his becomes ruthless and gets into smuggling machine parts for his polyester mills. His corrupt ways are now known to Manik who along with his newspaper reporter decides to expose Guru and his illegal ways. His battle with the newspaper begins and causes him a lot of stress due to which he suffers a stroke and gets paralyzed on his right side. Eventually he is brought before a jury where he gives an explanation and is cleared of 27 out of 29 charges. He pays for the two charges and is allowed to go back to his business with honest means.

 

The movie is directed and produced by Mani Ratnam and G. Srinivasan. The music is composed by A.R Rahman and Srinjoy Bhattacharya.
