Gazala, played by Shabana Azmi, is a dutiful and dedicated middle-aged Muslim wife living with her husband and daughter Salma. She is however ill-treated and abused due to her inability of giving a male child to the family. She is then sent back to her parent’s house. Gazala then stays at her mother’s place and goes through even more torture in society for living there. The story then shows the struggles of Gazala, her mother and sister-in-law. The film gives an insight into the life of women in the name of fertility or in the desperate need of wanting a male child in the family. The story of the movie shows the struggles of five different women and how their life changes.
The movie is directed by Shyam Benegal and produced by Anil Pandit and Raj Pius. The star cast includes Rajit Kapoor, Rajeshwari Sachdev, Shabana Azmi, Surekha Sikri, Nandita Dass, Lalit Tiwari, Srivallabh Vyas, Alka Trivedi, Meghna Kothari and Seema Bhargava. The music is composed by Vanraj Bhatia. The screenplay is written by Shama Zaid and Priya Chandrashekar. The cinematography is by Rajan Kothari.
