Dibyanath, played by Anupam Kher, lives with his wife Sujata, played by Jaya Bachchan and son Brati in an affluent lifestyle in Calcutta. Brati has finished his schooling and started studying in a well-known college and is doing quite well. Their beautiful little world comes crashing down when one day they get the news that no parent ever wants to hear. The news of their son Brati being killed comes to them. The nervous and deavastated parents hurry to identify the body, if it really is their son’s. They identify it as Brati and they are horrified by the tragedy. They are inconsolable and don’t know how this could have ever happened. Sujata struggles to come to terms with the loss of her son. They are tormented, to be called the parents of corpse No. 1084.
Sujata starts to dig deeper into her son’s very private life. It is then that she learns about his girlfriend Nandini, played by Nandita Das. She is also shocked to know that Brati had joined a rebel group called the Naxalite, which might have led to his death. She slowly understands the struggles her son was going through. The movie is directed by Govind Nihalani and produced by Govind Nihalani, Manmohan Shetty. The star cast includes Milind Gunaji, Seema Biswas, Joy SenGupta and Nandita Das. The music is composed by Dev Jyoti Mishra. The dialogues are written by Tripurari Sharma. The cinematography, screenplay and story is written by Govind Nihalani.
