Saket Ram, played by Kamal Haasan, was an honest and righteous man, who worked as an archeologist, during the partition of Bengal. He works for a Muslim boss in the Sindh province. When he returns to his wife Aparna, played by Rani Mukerjee in Calcutta, riots have already broken out. Muslims are slaughtering and killing people. He is devastated to see a rash Muslim group entering his house. They rape and murder Aparna. He goes into a fit of rage and kills the Muslims who took his wife’s life. The tragic loss of his wife turns Saket into a Hindu extremist, where he not only hates Muslims but also holds a strong grudge against Gandhiji and his non-violence ideologies. Gandhiji is eventually killed by Nathuram Godse and Saket dies at the age of 89 in the presence of his grandson Saketh Ram junior.
