Amar Nath (Amitabh Bachchan) is a poor guy who sells cinema tickets & snacks outside the theatre. A politician Shankar Narayan gets him enrolled into the police academy; he becomes an inspector after passing out. He falls in love with Asha (Sridevi) a daughter of a multi-millionaire Sitaram (Utpal Dutt). Amar Nath kills a terrorist and successfully gets promoted as the ACP. Asha and he get married and they live a happy married life and she gives birth to a son.
Amar Nath after his success in the police force, quits his job to take over from Shankar Narayan as he quits and asks Amar to take over. However, he is being used as a pawn for the politician’s dirty work. After that he kills a smuggler, gets popular with the public one day, Amar is caught on camera handing over a brief case to the smuggler. The commissioner & inspector are asked to investigate this case, so Amar is arrested. Amar Nath realises he is being cheated and used for wrong practices putting his police career at stake.
