Jewel Thief is a spy thriller film directed by Vijay Anand starring Dev Anand, Vyjayantimala and Ashok Kumar in the lead roles. It also features Tanuja, Helen, Faryal and Anju Mehendru in the supporting character roles. The film was produced by Navketan Films, Dev Anand’s home production house. Jewel Thief went on to become a super hit at the box office.
Vinay essayed by Dev Anand is an young man who falls in trouble constantly for being mistaken as a look-alike jewel thief named Amar. Vinay starts working with the police and pretends to be Amar to be able to crack his crime ring and in the process, their true identities get jumbled.
Vinay lives with his parents, his father is a police commissioner who is upset on his son as he is not fit for any skills and is a keen observer of jem stones . The city is being held at ransom by the news of a daring jewel thief who continues to give them the slip and escape. Here Vinay’s parents are happy that he has secured a job for himself at the leading jeweler by the name of Visamber Nath wherein he meets his pretty daughter Anju and both start liking each other. But their romance comes to abrupt end when several people start greeting Vinay as Prince Amar. Things get out of hand when a woman named Shalini also comes forward claiming that Vinay is her fiancé. He takes upon him the challenge to prove that he is Vinay and not Amar and co-operates with the police to locate Amar but finds himself entangled in a tricky scheme that completely robs him off his peace of mind, his sanity and his identity as he becomes a target of every policeman in India particularly the Kingdom of Sikkim. Ae the end, Vinay poses as a culprit to end the crime.
