Sultana, played by Sadiya Siddiqui, is a prostitute from a small town. She comes to the city accompanied by her pimp Khudabaksh. The big city with its hustle and bustle seems to intimidate Sultana and she is bewildered by the crowd and chaos. So much so that all her attempts at seducing new clients are invain. She isn’t able to get a client for the longest time. Even Khudabaksh seems to be completely dazed out getting a lucrative job. Nothing seems to work out for them.
Sultana soon starts to lose hope and gets into a pensive mood. Her loneliness makes her desire for the ‘Kali Salwar’ or black lower garment, which she wants to wear for mourning during Moharram. She one day beckons a man named Shankar, played by Irrfan Khan, passing by on the street. He changes Sultana’s life with his wit and humor. Every thing changes from then on.
The movie is directed by Fareeda Mehta and produced by National Film Development Corporation of India and Andaaz Productions. The star cast includes Vrajesh Hirjee, Jeetu Shahstri, Kay Kay Menon, Ashok Banthia and Sheeba Chaddha.
