Rahul, played by Fawad Khan and his brother Arjun, played by Sidharth Malhotra are not on talking terms. On the behest of their 90 year old grandfather Amarjeet, played by Rishi Kapoor, the two re-unite in their family home in Coonoor. Rahul is an established writer having written many books, while Arjun struggles with publishing even with a single book.
To support himself Arjun works as a bartender and writes in his free time. His parents Harsh, played by Rajat Kapoor and mother Sunita, played by Ratna Pathak are proud of Rahul and this upsets Arjun. The couple has their own crosses to bear, as Harsh has had an affair in the past and this has considerably strained the relationship.
Meanwhile, Amaarjeet shares his last wish of taking a family photo with his entire family in one frame and calling it Kapoor & Sons since 1921. At a party, Arjun happens to meet a girl called Tia, played by Alia Bhatt and the two hit it off. She also meets Rahul on another occasion and they too become friends. On one of their meetings, Tia ends up kissing Rahul, which shocks him, and she later regrets it as she’s in love with Arjun.
The Kapoors throw a party to celebrate Amarjeet’s birthday and everything goes well as planned until, Anu arrives. Anu is the same lady Harsh had an affair with. All hell breaks lose and Sunita and Harsh end up having a huge fight.
The Kapoors tries one last time, to take the family photo but unfortunately it’s the day everyone revels his or her darkest secrets.
