Karthik Calling Karthik is a 2010 Psychological thriller helmed by Vijay Lalwani under the banner of Excel Entertainment starring Farhan Akhtar and Deepika Padukone in the forefront lead. The movie narrated the story of a reclusive introvert with a troubled childhood whose boring life changes drastically after a series of phone calls from an unknown number leading to shocking revelations.
The movie begins off by showing the boring and depressing life of the Titular character Karthik which goes on about an infinite loop with disturbing childhood memories, an abusive boss at office resulting in daily humiliations and a prospective one sided love for one of his colleagues. The character is filled with remorse for the accidental death of his bully elder brother at a young age, which he sees upon himself. With nothing in his life going the right way, once decides to commit suicide and the story takes a wild turn from there when he starts receiving phone calls from an unknown number strikingly with his own sound on the other end who calls himself Karthik too.
In the meantime his love life also blossoms with his colleague Shonali played by Deepika Padukone.The person at the other end promises to make his life happier but insists on total secrecy regarding the calls to others, afterwards threatening him to ruin his life once again when the word goes out. Then Karthik elopes to a faraway place with no telephone line to stay away from the frequent 5 am phone calls to start his life afresh after a series of let-downs. The movie then goesshow the series of mix ups coming at the end regarding his personality.
The movie had a good run at the box office along with rave reviews from all critics. The majority of the credit was bestowed upon Farhan Akhtar’s gritty and keen interpretation of the psychic male lead and many cited his performance to be one of the best things about the unique thriller flick. Karthik Calling Karthik is a thoroughly watchable thriller with a novel concept and the music by Shankar Ehshan Roy too was well received, especially the song “Uff Teri Adaa”
