Surya Sen, played by Abhishek Bachchan works as a school teacher and is an activist in the Indian Independence. Other revolutionaries, such as Lokenath Bal, Ganesh Ghosh, Nirmal Sen, Ananta Singh and Ambika Chakraborty, consider him as their leader. Pritilata along with her friend Kalpana, played by Deepika Padukone, want to join the Republican army. Surya assigns them the job of getting relevant information about the Cantonment, to prove their skill.
Kalpana and Pritilata act as sweepers and draw a terrific sketch of the Cantonment. Later while on the way to Patiya village along with his sister, Surya is surrounded by Major Cameron and his men. He however gets shot by Nirmal, while he helps Surya escape and later dies in battle. Pritilata later attacks the European club with eight other youth and kill the officials there. Pritilata however, commits suicide by swallowing Cyanide pills.
Surya escapes and hides with Kalpana and other young rebels in another house, while the SP of Chittagong and other officials are looking desperately for Surya. Haripada, a young rebel assassinates the SP. Later on, Surya finally gets captured one night by the police troopers and is sentenced to death. Before his death sentenced he is brutally tortured by the British executioners who break all his teeth, limbs and joints with a hammer. They later take an unconscious Surya Sen to the gallows and hang him.
The movie is directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar and produced by Ajay Bijli, Sanjeev Bijli and Sunita A Gowarikar.
