Vijaykamal (Sanjeev Kumar) is the son of a rich man Thakur Suraj Singh, VijayKamal is in love with Sapna who marries his Bihari neighbour (Shatrughan Sinha) He is already heartbroken when he sees her committing suicide at her place on the eve of their Diwali party. Vijay Kamal due to the shock loses his mental state.  The family try their best to give him the best treatment but it’s all gone in vain until his father thinks if they get him married that might help him recover. No woman would be willing to marry a man who is not in his sense and has mental health issue. So the father approaches a prostitute Chand(Mumtaz) to pretend to be his wife.  One day in a weaker moment, Chand is sexually assaulted by Vijay Kamal who does not remember his actions. The couple also get friendly over the months and he slowly starts improving in his health.  But when he recovers and comes back to his normal senses, he does not remember Chand. Chand due to the assault is left pregnant.  She in the meantime saves Vijay Kamal’s sister from the evil Bihari who had bad intentions.   The family is however not willing to accept her as the daughter-in-law of the house due to her background.   Mohan(Jeetendra) is also in love with her but knows she belongs to Vijaykamal.  He steps in to intervene to make his family understand that Chaand is not a toy to be handled and then thrown away and she is not a prostitute and was only raised as one as she was found abandoned after a train accident but originally hails from a respected family. The film ends with a happy ending with Vijaykamal and Chaand getting married.
