It is a 1943 drama film during the second world war 2 period, directed by Gyan Mukherjee, produced by Bombay Talkies , starring Ashok Kumar in a double role, Mumtaz Shanti, Mehmood. It was the first blockbuster in the history of Indian Cinema.

Shekhar(Ashok Kumar) is a pickpocket and a con man who has just come out the jail after completing his third sentence.  But things haven’t changed much and he does a pickpocket of an expensive priceless watch.

He is being offered to rob a fortune by the original pickpocket Banke (V.H. Desai) but Shekhar is not interested and walks out and bumps into the original owner of the watch (P.F. Pithawala). Out of desperation to watch the live performance by Rani (Mumtaz Shanti), the owner of the watch wants to sell it and Shekhar takes him into the theatre to see the performance.  In the theatre the owner points out to an old man Indrajit, once upon a time, a rich and prosperous man who happens to be Rani’s father. 

Due to various circumstances, Shekhar discovers Ranui has a limp and she is unable to perform her dance well on the stage.  She has a younger sister Leela who is pregnant out of a wedlock.  Rani being the sole breadwinner is struggling to make ends meet.   Shekhar decides to take up the offer by Banke to steal the vault which goes awry. Shekhar while escaping accidentally drops his chain and Indrajit finds it and remembers the chain belongs to his long lost son Madan (Ashok Kumar).      During Rani’s stage performance, Indrajit gets back both his sons Shekhar who is in love with Rani comes to watch her performance.
