Raja, played by Amrish Puri is a ruthless and powerful man who terrorizes the people who work under him. His most loyal slave is a mute and honest man named Shankar, played by Shahrukh Khan, who is ready to do anything for his master. His psychopath brother beats him without a reason. One day Raja sees a beautiful village belle named Gauri, played by Madhuri Dixit and is completed besotted by her. He makes up his mind to marry her at any cost. He then sends her a picture of Shakar, making her think it is him who is sending a marriage proposal. Gauri sees the picture and readily accepts the proposal. Little does she know that her life will be turned upside down.

 

When the marriage ceremony  begins, Gauri comes to know that it is Raja that she is marrying and not Shankar. She gets traumatized and falls unconscious. When she regains consciousness she learns that she is married to the elderly man. She runs and tries to commit suicide when Shankar and his friend save her. She is furious at Shankar for ruining her life and even slaps him. That is when she is told the truth about him being mute. She truly falls in love with him and decides to defy Raja and be with Shankar alone. Later Shankar comes to know that Raja was the man who killed his parents and put hot coals into his mouth, which made him mute. He finally kills Raja and avenges his parents death.

 

The movie is directed and produced by Rakesh Roshan. The music is composed by Rajesh Roshan and lyrics are written by Indeevar. The screenplay is written by Sachin Bhowmik and Ravi Kapoor. The star cast includes Shahrukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Amrish Puri, Ranjeet, Salim Ghouse, Ashok Saraf, Jack Gaud, Suresh Chatwal, Mohnish Bahl, Ram Mohan, Vikas Anand, Pradeep Singh Rawat, Deepshika, Kunika and Himani Shivpuri.
