Rahul, played by Shahrukh Khan is a handsome and happening boy in his college. He becomes close friends with Anjali, played by Kajol, who is mischievous and tomboyish. While Rahul keeps hitting on girls in his college Anjali keeps making fun of him. Soon the principal’s daughter Tina, played by Rani Mukerjee enters the college. She was studying in the US and has come to Mumbai to complete her studies. Rahul is instantly attracted to her. He tries to woo her and soon she too falls for him. Meanwhile Anjali starts having feelings for Rahul but is heart broken to know that he loves Tina.
A teary eyed Anjali leaves for her hometown. Meanwhile Tina and Rahul get married and she gives birth to a baby girl. Unfortunately due to birthing complications, Tina passes away but before that she gives a bundle of letters to Rahul to give to her daughter on her every birthday. They name their daughter Anjali as well. Soon little Anjali learns of her dad’s and Anjali’s friendship and goes in search of her. She meets her at a children’s camp and Rahul comes along searching for his daughter. Rahul and Anjali fall in love this time and rekindle their friendship. Anjali is however engaged to Aman, played by Salman Khan. She later realizes that she loves Rahul and Aman too comes to know through Rahul’s daughter Anjali. At their wedding day Aman asks Anjali to marry Rahul as he is the right person for her.
The movie is directed and produced by Karan Johar. The star cast includes Shahrukh Khan, Rani Mukherjee, Kajol, Anupam Kher, Johnny Lever, Parzan Dastoor, Sana, Saeed Kudas, Salman Khan, Farida Jalal, Archana Puran Singh, Reema Lagoo, Himani Shivpuri and Neelam. The music is composed by Jatin Lalit and the lyrics are written by Sameer.
