Main Azaad Hoon is a thriller drama film, an adaption of the 1941 English Film Meet John Doe. A film by Javed Akhtar starring Amitabh Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, directed by Tinnu Anand, released in 1989.
The story is of a journalist Subhashini (Shabana Azmi) who works for a daily newspaper in the city of Rajnagar. A very bold and daring journalist who pens her words without hesitation any news or articles with her openness against the corrupt politicians. When she loses her job with few others when the ownership of the newspaper changes hands she decides to start a fictitious column to vent out her frustrations and uses a name Azaad to write in the column.
In a few weeks she comes across a jobless man Amitabh Bachchan, who has no aim in life and Subhashini offers him the job to pose as Azaad. He sees it as a chance to make quick money not realizing that he is being used and framed as the person behind her ideology , with the result he becomes famous a very popular writer who is believed to be writing the articles under the name of Azaad.
The new development takes a turn when the new owner of the newspaper Seth Gokulchand (Manohar Singh) uses it as a bait to promote his newspaper. He encourages Subhashini to write unacknowledged and uncomfortable facts about the current state of affairs and goes one step forward by claiming that on 26th January as a mark of protest against the failed system, Azaad would give up his life by jumping from the highrise building, which becomes a threat to the corrupt political leaders and the local politicians.
Azaad (Amitabh Bachchan) though was only being used actually starts working his mind towards the various public rallies in his name. he starts believing in those ideas and he not only becomes the public leader but a nationwide hero. To prove what begun as his fake identity as Azaad and a fiction, he wants to make it the truth and decides to jump from the 30th story building but before he kills himself, he records a message for the masses and for his supporters that a true Azaad should be evolved in each one of us to fight against corruption and mal practices in the system.
