Pratap and Kashinath are close friends and spend a lot of time together making music. One day the duo make a bet that Pratap will transform a uncouth girl into a skilled and graceful singer. Kashinath agrees on the condition that he will then marry her. One day when Pratap takes the wrong train home he meets the loud mouthed Kamli selling neem branches. He tells her that he can teach her to sing and be a successful
singer. She agrees and goes with him. She then moves in with Pratap to be his full time protégé. Pratap teaches her the fine art of singing while Kashinath tutors her on the correct etiquettes of talking and behaving. They then test her in a party. But due to drinking heavily Kamli gives away her identity. After a few months of training, Kamli finally takes part in a singing concert and everyone loves it. She later comes to know that Pratap had simply made a bet with his friend and doesn’t really care for her. Heartbroken Kamli leaves. Kashinath then realizes that his friend has fallen in love with her. Before they know it Kamli returns to Pratap. The film is directed by Basu Chatterjee and produced by Amit Khanna. The music is composed by Rajesh Roshan. The star cast includes Dev Anand, Girish Karnad, Mehmood, Tina Minum, Dimple Kapadia, Tarun Ghosh, Birbal, Jalal Agha, Raj Kishore and Leela Mishra.
