The East India Company brought the British into India, where they exploited our people, their resources and used cheap labor to get their work done. They also ruled the people and divided what was left in the country. What brought about the ultimate revolt was when a rumor was spread that the new rifle launched had the coating of dead pig and cow flesh. The cartridge of the rifle had to be bitten before it was put to use. The Hindus considered the cow only, while the Muslims considered the Pig unholy. Thus there was a huge protest. Mangal Singh, played by Aamir Khan became the first soldier to bite off the bullet and pour the gunpowder in the barrels, after assurances from the seniors that the rumors were not true.

Things take a turn for the worse when it is discovered that the cartridges were in fact greased with cow and pig fat. An infuriated Mangal gathers 300,000 Hindustani soldiers to start a rebellion against the British. The Caucasian soldiers even go as far as to call the Indian soldiers Kaala Kuttas(black dogs). The Indian soldiers have had enough and make up their mind to get rid of the East India Company and their ruthless bosses once and for all.

The movie is directed by Ketan Mehta and produced by Bobby Bedi, Deepa Sahi and Ketan Mehta. The music is composed by A R Rahman. The cinematography is by Himman Dhamija and choreography is by Raju Khan, Saroj Khan and Sandeep Soparrkar.
