Maqbool, played by Irrfan Khan works for notorious don Jahangir aka Abba Ji, played by Pankaj Kapoor. Maqbool feels indebted to Abba Ji for taking him under his wing and is close to him. Corrupt and conniving police officers played by Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah predict that eventually Maqbool will take over Abba Ji’s reins of the underworld. Abba Ji’s mistress Nimmi, played by Tabu is also has a secret affair with Maqbool. She wants him to kill Abba Ji and take over his empire. Torn between love and loyalty, Maqbool finally does what his love wishes and murders Abba Ji in his sleep while next to Nimmi.
The suspicion of Abba Ji’s murder is placed on Maqbool but no one can prove it. Meanwhile the lovers are filled with guilt about the crime they have committed and continue to see Abba Ji’s ghost. The lovers never live a content life and eventually meet a tragic end. The movie is directed by Vishal Bharadwaj and produced by Bobby Bedi. The music is composed by Vishal Bharadwaj.
