Masaan is film, which has two separate stories but eventually blend into one. Devi, played by Richa Chadda is a professor at a prominent college, she falls in love with one of her students and they decide to rent out a hotel room. While the couple is making love, the police barge into their room and interrupt them. Inspector Mishra, takes a recording on his phone of the skimpily clad Devi and later blackmails her and her father Vidhyadhar, to pay 3 Lakhs or face arrest.

 

 Devi’s father unable to arrange such a large amount of cash, starts a betting game where small boys will collect the coins thrown into Ganga river in a short time. An orphan boy Jhonta volunteers. Meanwhile Devi finds it tough to get another job due to the news of her sexual actions that are spread.

 

In the next story, Deepak, played by Vicky Kaushal is an engineering student belonging to the Dom community where his family works at the crematory and burns funeral pyres. He falls in love with Shaalu, played by Shweta Tripathi who belong to a higher caste. She assures him that whatever her parents decision she will always be with him. In a ugly turn of fate, Shaalu dies in a horrific bus accident and her body is taken to the same crematory where Deepak’s family works. Deepak is shattered seeing her body and keeps her ring as a memory.

 

After a couple of months when Deepak is able to finally get over Shaalu he throws her ring into the Ganga which is then found by Jhonta and given to Vidhyadhar, who sells it and pays off Mishra. Devi comes to the river to throw the gift given by her student and meets Deepak and they start talking.
