Meenakshi Iyer, played by Konkana Sen Sharma leaves on a bus to Chennai with her child to meet her husband. She is accompanied by a family friend Raja Chowdhury, played by Rahul Bose. He is requested by Meenakshi’s family to take care of her and her young son. He later reveals his Muslim identity to her. She is shocked and curses herself for drinking water from his bottle, since he is a Muslim and she is a orthodox Brahmin Tamilian. Raja is embarrassed and upset and wants to leave the bus but cannot because of the police patrolling outside.
Meanwhile a riot breaks out and Hindu fanatics stop their bus and barge in asking the identity of each passenger. They even at times check for circumcision to be sure of suspicious men. When they ask Meenakshi she tells them her identity and introduces Raja as her husband Mr Iyer. Raja is humbled at this gesture of Meenakshi. Later when they reach Chennia, Mr Iyer comes to receive Meenakshi and their son and Raja and she bid each other good bye.
