Mulk is a story of a youngest son of a Muslim family settled in Benaras who gets involved in terrorist activities which conspires a bomb blast massacre. The effects of which are adverse on his blameless family who is left to defend themselves as innocent and not involved as anti-nationals.
Director Anubhav Sinha sets out this stage to bring to light the people’s perception of the Muslim community in our country caused by the religious divide which is getting deeper , therefore a film like Mulk is what he felt is the need of hour. The film throws a light on how people fall prey to the political agendas that is intended to bring about a divide and rule in the country . It also digs into the deeper hatred propaganda against the two religions, the Hindus and the Muslims which is used as a destructive measure against the nation.
Here in this film Murad Ali Mohammed, (Rishi Kapoor) is a well-respected lawyer who has lot of Hindu friends in his small city of Benaras. His daughter-in-law Aarti Mohammed portrayed by Taapsee Pannu is also a Hindu. Following a bomb blast which kills several people. Murad Ali’s younger brother’s son Shahid Mohammed ( Prateik Babbar) is held responsible and is a suspected terrorist. But he refuses to admit and surrender. The dreadful incident changes the life of his family and Shahid’s father Bilaal Mohammed (Manoj Pahwa) is taken into police custody for a crime that he was not involved in, only with the suspicion of being involved with his son in the terrorist activities. The friends of the family turn against them as foes . Murad Ali has nobody except himself to defend his brother to prove his innocence that they are also loyal to the nation and as patriotic as anybody else in the country.
Rishi Kapoor the veteran actor performs as the seasoned actor that brings out the best in every frame. Supporting actors are Neena Gupta, Manoj Pahwa, Prateik Babbar and Ashuthosh Rana whose performance have also been brilliant. Taapsee Pannu as the Hindu Daughter-in-law of the Muslim shines through her courtroom scenes. Shot in the by lanes of small towns in India the film captures the communal indifference and enmity between the Hindu and Muslims weakest moments while the Muslim family try to reclaim their lost honour.
