Jugni is a modest and respectable woman living with her three daughters Nimki, Mitthu and Chinki. Jugni was once a dancer with a theatre group but now has left it. They are staring women who take care of each other in the face of adversity. Their peaceful life is occasionally ruffled by their alcoholic father’s presence who was with Jugni in her troupe and forced her to dance. She left him years ago but he keeps coming back
to unite with his daughters. The family of four women make their living by letting tourists and passers by lodge at their home. One day a truck driver named Gerulal stops over and lodges for a while. He falls in love with Nimki but Mitthu falls for him. He is bewildered by the strength and grace the four women handle their household even though they are financially struggling. While leaving he proposes his love to Nimki but she
refuses him and asks him to marry Mitthu instaed and he does not accept and leaves. A few years later Gerulal is shocked to see Chinki dancing at a theatre and confronts her. She tells him that Mitthu lost her mental stability and killed herself. Seeing her Jugni died of shock and she had no choice but to dance to make ends meet. He rushes to find a destitute and shattered Nimki and takes her with him. The film is directed by Gulzar and produced by Jayant Malkan. The music is composed by R D Burman. The star cast includes Sanjeev Kumar, Kiran Virale, Sharmila Tagore, T P Jain, Ram Mohan, Kamal Deep, Shabana Azmi and Waheeda Rehman.
