Paan Singh Tomar, played by Irrfan Khan works in the Army and is quite athletic. He joins the Sports division even though his interest in sports is very low but due to the no restriction on diet he is excited. He is selected for the 5000 meters race but later wins the 3000-steeplechase race. He takes part in the Indian National Games and wins Gold seven years in a row. He however, wants to fight the war of 1962 and 1965 but isn’t allowed to do so as sportsmen aren’t allowed to fight.
Paan singh’s brother comes to visit him and tells him of their village property being seized by their relative Bhanwar Singh. Paan Singh retires from the army and goes back to his village to settle the dispute but turns out Bhanwar Singh attacks Paan Singh’s family members, beating up his son. He send s his son to the army to stay away from the chaos. Neither police nor the district collector are able to help Paan Singh. Bhanwar Singh ultimately kills his mother while the rest of them escape. He swears revenge and forms a gang of few relatives who are against Bhanwar Singh and raises hell in the Chambal Valley.
Paan Singh becomes a dreaded dacoit, where he robs wealthy businessmen and uses the money to buy arms and ammunition for his gang. They plan an attack on Bhanwar Singh who has police protection. In a long chase they finally end up killing Bhanwar. Nine villagers are also killed in the revenge drama and people now plead with Paan Singh to surrender so the massive manhunt would stop but he refuses.
One of his aides Gopi, played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui who is a police informer alerts the cops about Paan Singh and his gang’s hideout and in a shootout all of them get killed including Paan Singh. The movie is directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia and produced by Ronnie Screwvala. The music is composed by Abhishek Ray.
