Lachchi, played by Rani Mukerjee is to marry a wealthy merchant’s son called Kishan, played by Shahrukh Khan. After the marriage ceremony at night Kishan is busy preparing for his new business venture and spends the night in bookkeeping thus ignoring the beautiful Lachchi. He leaves for the city the next early morning to only return after 5 years. A heartbroken Lachchi isn’t able to cope with this and is sad but her sister-in law Gajrobai, played by Juhi Chawla consoles her that her husband too has gone away. A ghost happens to catch a glimpse of Lachchi and falls in love with her beauty.
The ghost takes the form of Kishan and comes to Lachchi. She is pleasantly surprised to see her husband back so soon. They enjoy married bliss and happiness in the next coming days. Soon Lachchi learns the truth that Kishan is actually a ghost and is confused. But Lachchi knows that she has been the happiest in life with this ghost than anyone could ever make her and she continues living with the new Kishen. Soon Lachchi becomes pregnant and is delighted with the news. Meanwhile the real Kishan is back after 5 years and is shocked to see his wife pregnant. The family members now have a tough job to ascertain who is the real Kishan. They meet a shepherd, Gadariya, played by Amitabh Bachchan on the way and ask him for help. He suggests that Lachchi’s lover enter a bottle. The ghost is then captured. Soon the ghost escapes and enters Kishan’s body while Lachchi gives birth to a baby girl.
The movie is directed by Amol Palekar and produced by Gauri Khan. The music is composed by M.M Kreem and Aadesh Shrivastav.
