Kishorilal, played by Amrish Puri is a wealthy industrialist settled in America with his family. He wants a traditional Indian bride for his son Rajiv. So he sends his foster son Arjun to check out the family and the daughter named Ganga, of his old family friend in India Suraj. When Arjun comes to India he is welcomed and his stay in their house is taken care of. Arjun even likes Ganga and gives back good reviews to Rajeev and his father. However he hides all Rajeev’s vices like that of smoking, drinking and womanizing. Arjun and Ganga become close friends. She is then asked to travel to America to get a taste of the life she will lead after marriage. Her aunt accompanies her along.
Rajeev is too fast in his approach and tries to get intimate with Ganga one night, claiming that since they are already engaged it is ok to get physical, but Ganga refuses and is furious. When he forces himself on her, Ganga attacks him and runs out. The whole family is looking for her and is worried. That is when Arjun finds her at the train station and talks to her. Meanwhile Rajeev’s conniving aunt posions Kishorilal’s mind that Arjun and Ganga have fallen in love and that the former wants her for himself. Ganga who is devastated at the turn of events asks to be taken back to India. Arjun reluctantly takes her back but Kishorilal has already warned Suraj of Arjun’s intentions. He beats him up and humiliates him while locks Ganga up in a room. Later when he learns that Rajjev had tried to molest Ganga, Kishorilal disowns him and lets Ganga and Arjun marry.
The movie is directed and produced by Subhash Ghai. The music is composed by Nadeem Shravan and the lyrics are written by Anand Bakshi. The star cast includes Shahrukh Khan, Mahima Chaudhary, Amrish Puri, Alok Nath, Pawan Malhotra, Anand Balraj, Aditya Narayan, Shashi Sharma, Akash Singh, Rakesh Thareja, Hari Bhatia, Apurva Agnihotri, Dina Pathak, Samta Sagar, Benu Kalsi, Smita Thareja and Himani Shivpuri.
