Set in Kolkata, Lolita, played by Vidya Balan, lives with her uncle who is burdened with debt. Their Naveen Roy next-door neighbor has given him a hefty loan, which he has promised will be paid back soon. Her uncle’s huge mansion is kept as a guarantee. Naveen’s son Shekhar, played by Saif Ali Khan and Lolita have been childhood friends. They become so close that he has asked her to take money from his cupboard if she ever needs it. Lolita starts working in Naveen Roy’s office and comes across a file that shows the design of a hotel, which is being planned to be made in place of her uncle’s mansion.
Lolita confronts Naveen Roy about it to which he humiliates her. She later takes help from Girish, played by Sanjay Dutt who is a relative of her neighbor. He is wealthy and just returned from abroad. He agrees to help her and gives her the money. A wall is then built between the two houses after the money is handed to Naveen Roy. Shekhar who is in love with Lolita misunderstands and things she is romantically involved with Girish and insults her. However years later it is revealed that during a family function, Lolita had already married Shekhar as per tradition of putting a gold chain around each other’s neck. But Shekhar doesn’t realize this. He agrees to marry the girl his father has chosen.
However on his wedding day Shekhar is shocked to know that Girish married Lolita’s cousin and she rejected his proposal. He then brings her home as his bride and breaks down the wall his father built. The movie is directed by Pradeep Sarkar and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. The music is composed by Shantanu Moitra. The cinematography is by Natarajan Subramaniam.
