Lord Moutbatten was the final Viceroy of India and thus assigned the task of dissolution of the British Raj in the country. He creates a disagreement between the PM Jawaharlal Nehru who wants to keep the country intact and Muhammed Ali Jinnah who wants a separate country called Pakistan for Muslims. Mountbattens valet Jeet who is a Hindu falls in love with a Muslim girl called Alia. She rejects his advances as they belong to different religions. He however continues to pursue her. Meanwhile due to the riots that have broken out in the country between Hindus and Muslims, the British decide to accelerate the partition process for independence.
Later Jeet learns that his family back home in Punjab has been killed. Alia comes to know that as a child her marriage was already fixed. This upsets her and she rejects her fiancé and departs for Pakistan with her father. Jeet then reads in the newspaper that the train taking people to Pakistan at night was attacked and all the passengers have been killed. This enrages Jeet and he resigns from his job. Later a critically injured Alia who is still alive and the lone survivor is brought in. She and Jeet finally unite.
The film is directed by Gurinder Chadhaand produced by Reliance Entertainment. The music is composed by A R Rahman. The star cast includes Manish Dayal, Huma Qureshi, Om Puri,Hugh Bonneville, Gillian Anderson and Michael Gambon.
