Peepli Live is a 2010 satirical comedy written and directed by debutant Anusha Rizvi, produced by Aamir Khan under Aamir Khan Productions. The movie which boasts of a ensemble star cast had Raghibir Yadhav, Omkar Das Manikpuri, Naseerudin Shah and Nawazuddin Siddiqui along with a string of new faces. The movie through a funny bone narrated the story of a villager’s whose desperate decision to commit suicide leads to a string of intentionally witty and dark turn of events in his village.
Peepli Live begins off by showing the struggle of Natha Das Manikpuri, a good natured farmer in the fictional village of “Mukhya Pradesh” who struggles to make ends meet with steadily decreasing crop yield and a huge family to support. Unable to repay his bank debts he decides to commit suicide after coming to know that the family would receive a big compensation after his death but word goes out accidentally regarding his plans. The rest of the movie goes on to show the dire witty, dark and insane reactions to the plan from the media’s and local politician and everyone around who dreams to cash in on the hot news.
Peepli Live is perhaps one of Bollywood’s most critically acclaimed offbeat productions of the last ten years and was a critic’s favourite with rave reviews from everywhere. The movie was appreciated for its witty yet thought provoking story line, highly natural acting and fine writing. The movie had a good run overall .
