Kishen, played by Jimmy Shergill is the son of Pandit Lal, who is a traditional and conservative Hindu Brahmin. They live very simple and middle class lives. Kishen goes away to study medicine and lives in a hostel. While there, he happens to meet a vivacious and happy go lucky girl called Reena Brown, played by Dia Mirza, who is a Christian by faith. He is helplessly attracted to her and they start dating and eventually fall in love. Reena introduces Kishen to her father James who is happy for his daughter and gives his blessings.
Kishen’s father Pandit on the other hand is not happy at all. He detests the fact that his son is in love with a non-Hindu girl and threatens them with dire consequences if they marry. He also tells James that if the marriage takes place then his unmarried daughter will never get a suitable groom. Over a huge argument the marriage is called off. The broken hearted couple move on with their lives and Kishen goes to live in Madhupur where all religions are openly embraced and respected. He later learns the truth about Reena when he meets her again after many years.
The movie is directed by Basu Chatterjee and the music is composed by Rajesh Roshan.
