Somen is a wealthy and righteous man with high morals. He cannot tolerate injustice and is against Kedar who uses his father’s influence to use the temple treasury. His father Swami Dharam, is the head priest. One day Somen meets a girl called Kajri at the annual village fest and is instantly drawn to her. She becomes close to him but doesn’t reciprocate his love. One day unexpectedly Kajri leaves the village with her family and Somen is distraught, as he looks everywhere for her but is unable to find her. On the way to their village Bansipura, Kajri gets abducted and raped by an unknown man. She then becomes pregnant and secretly gives birth to a child.
She then begs people to give her food so she can nurse the child but no one obliges and the child dies. She then asks Swami Dharam to cremate the child but he refuses so she buries him. After a year they meet again and Somen is drawn to Kajri again but she evades him. To tell him the truth, Kajri writes a letter about her past struggles and sends it to Somen, however he never gets the letter and they get engaged. His father then recognizes Kajri and tells Somen the truth. They then find the man who raped her and kill him, thus Somen and Kajri get married.
The movie is directed by Rajiv Kapoor and produced by Randhir Kapoor. The music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal and the lyrics are written by Anand Bakshi. The story and screenplay is written by Jainendra Jain. The star cast includes Rishi Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, Shammi Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Om Puri, Prem Chopra, Govind Namdeo, Vishwa Mehra, Arun Verma, Ghanshyam Rohera, Dinesh Anand, Suresh Bhagwat, Reema Lagoo, Himani Shivpuri and Sulabha Arya.
