It is a Patriotic film produced/ directed by Manoj Kumar, Music by Kalyanji-Anandji, written by Shashi Goswami- Manoj Kumar starring Ashok Kumar, Saira Banu, Manoj Kumar, Pran, Nirupa Roy, Prem Chopra and Vinod Khanna.
The film has a story with the background during the British Rule in 1942. Harnam(pran) who betrays a freedom fighter who dies leaving his wife Ganga(Kamini Kaushal) and his son Bharath (Manoj Kumar).
Bharath grows up and goes to London to study, meets his father’s friend Sharma (Madan Puri) with his westernized wife Rita(Shammi), daughter Preeti (Saira Banu), and a hippie son Shankar(Rajendranath). Preeti is a girl born and raised in London and is westernized with her habits of smoking, drinking, wearing western revealing clothes and has no Indian values. Bharath and Preeti fall in love with each other but she does not want to move to India . With time she realises her shortcomings and what India is all about and its true values. She decides to visit India to understand better and falls in love with the people and the country and everything there, that brings about a change in her completely to be an Indian Bahu. The film ends with a happy note with the lovers uniting in a marital bliss.
