Kundan, played by Dhanush is the only son to Tamil Brahmin parents living in Varanasi. He falls in love and is obsessed with a Muslim girl Zoya, played by Sonam Kapoor. He tries several times to impress her or talk to her but gets slapped by her every time. She eventually decides to meet him seeing but soon learns that he is a Hindu and her parents will object to this union and she begins to avoid him. Fearing of a pending affair, her parent send her off to Aligarh.

 

Zoya joins the Jawaharlal Nehru University and meets the student leader Akram, played by Abhay Deol. With initial hostility, she begins to fall for him. On returning back to her hometown, Zoya barely recognizes Kundan, but he is still in love with her and ask her to accept him but she tells him of her love for Akram. She asks Kundan to convince her parents to allow her to marry him. A heartbroken Kundan agrees to help her and move on with another girl, thus he proposes to his childhood friend Bindiya, played by Swara Bhaskar.

 

On the day of Zoya’s marriage Kundan finds out that Akram is a Sikh and not a Muslim as Zoya claimed. Enraged at fooling him, Kundan reveals the truth to her parents who beat up Akram and Zoya attempts suicide. Later at the hospital Akram tells Kundan it was Zoya’s idea to not reveal his religion to anyone. He later succumbs to his injuries, leaving Kundan devastated and guilty for his death. He starts looking for Zoya in the University and helps out by working at a canteen nearby. She still holds a grudge against him and after being encouraged by the CM decides to get Kundan injured at the campaign speech.

 

Kundan gets injured in the blast and Zoya confesses about her and the CM’s involvement and is ready to go to jail. Kundan eventually succumbs to his injuries and dies. The movie is directed and produced by Aanand L RAi and Krishika Lulla. The music is composed by A.R Rahman.
