Raavan is a 2010 Bollywood bilingual Epic adventure romantic drama film co-written and directed by Legendary Mani Ratnam with a star studded cast consisting of Abhishek Bachchan, Aiswarya Rai Bachchan, Vikram and Govinda in the lead. The movie is a larger than life idiosyncratic retelling of the Ramayana from a different perspective which explored the relationship conflicts which develops between Raavan and Sita amidst her captivity in Raavan’s camp from the epic with Rama on the lookout for her in a current semi fictional setting. Raavan was also simultaneously released in Tamil with a lightly altered star cast and also dubbed in Telugu.
Raavan begins off by showing the local patriarch like existence of the anti-hero Beera ( Raavan) and the events leading up to his sisters suicide which prompts him to kidnap the wife Ragini ( Sita) of a Police Officer Dev ( Ram) in hope for retribution to the wrong doers of the local police leading to his sister’s death. After making an attempt to end her life, Ragini( Sita) begins to develop a soaring emotional relationship with her captor Beera over the period. The movie then shows the events that led up to an exhilarating climax viewing the epic from a different perspective with minor changes.
Raavan had received rave reviews at the time of its release from most corners and has emerged as a modern day cult classic of master craftsman Mani Ratnam. The soundtrack of the film by A R Rahman was a chartbuster in all languages and is considered one of the best albums of the 2000’s.
