Mannu, played by Ajay Devgn has lost his job at a jute mill in Bhagalpur, Bihar. He is now in search of finance to start his own business but is running out of options. He then visits his ex-finace Neeru, played by Aishwarya Rai. She is now happily married to another man or so it seems and lives in Calcutta. Mannu and Neeru were engaged 6 years ago, when the latter walked out on him to be married to a much richer man. They talk about the old times and reminisce about sweet memories. Although there is no bitterness between them, they still seem to remember what happened 6 years back.
Neeru pretends to be living a comfortable and prosperous life but Mannu can see through it all. They talk about a lot of things from their past and present. Meanwhile Neeru borrows Mannu’s raincoat to go out and get food. Her landlord comes to her house and Mannu opens the door to greet him. In Neeru’s absence, he tells Mannu that he should give some money to her to pay for the rent as her financial situation isn’t too good. Hearing this Mannu is shocked. He leaves a letter under her bedsheet. When Neeru returns he doesn’t mention the landlord to her. When Mannu wears his raincoat and leaves, his heart sinks to find Neeru’s gold bangles in the pockets with a letter saying that he should have informed her of his financial condition.
The movie is written and directed by Rituparno Ghosh and produced by Shree Venkatesh Films. The music is composed by Debajyoti Mishra and the cinematography is by Aveek Mukhopadhyay.
