Ramji, played by Madhavan is a naïve and uneducated but skilled cook living in a village with his sister. Being orphans, he takes the responsibility of getting his sister married. However the groom’s family asks for a hefty dowry which he promises to pay. He thus gets a lucrative job as a cook with multi-millionaire family in London. He leaves for London, but when he arrives at the doorstep of the family, he comes to know that the head of the family has died without signing Ramji’s paperwork and thus he is left jobless. He then starts working illegally without a permit in a NRI owned restaurant. Soon the restaurant becomes popular due to his expert cooking skills and his friendliness. But the police smell a rat.

 

The police file a case against the restaurant owner and now Ramji’s friend asks him to get married to a British citizen in order to continue to stay in London without a hassel. So he marries his friend’s girlfriend Samira in a church. Soon the police refer the matter to the embassy suspicious of a fake marriage. Samira and Ramji are called for an interview, before which they prepare and learn a lot about each other. Ramji cooks delicious food for her and wins her over. Later the the interview it is revealed that Ramji is indeed illegal but gets the good news that he has won a cooking competition and is given a job at the Ritz Hotel. He doesn’t take the job but marries Samira for real in his village in India.

 

The movie is directed by Sanjay Dayma and produced by Sunanda Murali Manohar. The story is by Kamal Haasan. The music is composed by Vishal Bhardwaj and Pravin Mani.
