The jailer McKinley, who hung freedom fighter Bhagat Singh along with his friends, is upset that the men are ready to die but wont give up on the dream of seeing India free. All this is written in a diary by a Russian revolutionary Lenin. The diary is found by McKinley’s granddaughter Sue who now wishes to make a film on it. Her colleagues however, mock and ridicule her for trying to make such a film, but she is determined and leaves for India. She arrives and her friend Sonia, played by Soha Ali Khan receives her. She tells Sonia about her plan and Sonia promises to help her find the appropriate actors for her film in her college.
Sonia introduces Sue to her group of friends, which include DJ, played by Aamir Khan, Karan, played by Siddharth Narayan, Aslam, played by Kunal Kapoor and Sukhi, played by Sharman Joshi. Thus she begins to imagine them, DJ as Chandrashekhar Azad, Karan as Bhagat Singh, Aslam as Ashfaqullah Khan, Sonia as Durgawati Devi and Sukhi as Shivaram Rajguru. She then meets a social activist Laxman, played by Atul Kulkarni and thinks is perfect to play Ramprasad Bismil.
Meanwhile Sonia’s boyfriend Ajay, played by R. Madhavan, who works in the Indian Air Force dies when his jet crashes. He is blamed for his crash but later it is revealed that the aircraft was faulty. There are nationwide protests to give the family justice. Meanwhile the boys kill Karan’s father who is corrupt and responsible for Ajay’s crash. They then go to a radio station and lock themselves inside to tell the public the truth. They all die in an encounter by the police.
