“Romeo” is a Tamil drama-romance comedy film made by Vinayak Vaithianathan featuring Vijay Antony and Mirnalini Ravi. The story revolves around “Arivazhagan” (Arivu) who is a Malaysian returnee in his early 30s and wishes to have a love life before marriage. He encounters “Leelavathi” (Leela) at his grandfather's funeral and soon grows fond of her. Leela, a theatre aspirant who wants to work in an MNC, due to her tight-fisted dad, has to pretend that she works in one. When her mother gets sick, Arivu pays for medical bills, but he is afraid to admit his love. Taking advantage of his generosity, Leela and her friends use Arivu to relocate to Chennai, and she consents to marry him unwillingly.
After arriving in Chennai, Leela's friends keep interfering with their relationship, and it becomes hard for Arivu to approach her. Leela finally agrees to divorce him, and Arivu is heartbroken. Heaping for sympathy, he uses the name 'Vikram' to speak secretly to Leela. Leela has no idea that she befriends 'Vikram' and becomes close to him. Arivu, meanwhile, directs a film on Leela and her friends and stars in it himself. As the shoot goes on, Leela gradually starts to enjoy Arivu's company. But when she demands to meet 'Vikram' personally, Arivu evades the encounter, resulting in emotional distress.
The plot twist occurs when one of the producers tries to attack Leela, and Arivu fights him off even though he has a phobia for fire. Seriously hurt, he is rushed to the hospital, and Leela starts realizing his true self. Towards the latter part of the movie, Arivu hands over the divorce papers to Leela that she had requested for. But in a fit of emotions, Leela confesses her love for him in front of the entire team. “Romeo” is an emotional but not serious film with elements of romance, drama, and comedy, with a heart-warming story on love, self-realization, and sacrifice.
