The film is directed, produced and written by Manoj Kumar, a multi starrer, released on 18th October 1974, starring Shashi Kapoor, Manoj Kumar, Zeenat Aman, Moushumi Chatterjee. In supporting roles were Amitabh Bachchan, Premnath, Madan Puri and Dheeraj.
Bharat’s (Manoj Kumar) father retires and the responsibility of looking after his siblings comes upon him, His two younger brothers Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan), Deepak (Dheeraj Kumar) and a sister Champa(Meena T) who is unmarried. Bharat gets a job as a singer. Sheetal (Zeenat Aman) is his girlfriend who does not approve of his job. Vijay turns to crime to support the family, a heated argument happens between them and Vijay leaves home and joins the army.
Mohan Babu (Shashi Kapoor) is a rich businessman, Sheetal works for him and falls in love with him because of his assets, and cannot imagine living in poverty. Mohan proposes to her and they get married. Bharat is devastated with losing her and his father at the same time. Lots of things happen and Bharat comes across with a corrupt businessman who convinces him to work with him so that he can give a better life to his family.
Does Bharat actually take the offer or his moral go against it.
