B.V Pradhan is a retired teacher and living a content life with his wife Parvati. Their only son Ajay lives and works in New York. One day they get a call from the US giving them the horrifying news that Ajay has been killed in a mugging gone wrong. Pradhan and Parvati are devastated and are unable to digest this news. Pradhan especially has been unable to cope with this tragic loss. One day he wakes up to write a letter to
his sin and suddenly it dawns on him that he has died. Parvati and his best friend Vishwanath are unable to console him to come to terms with this loss even after 3 months. Pradhan confides that he has no will to live. His son was their only bread winner and now they have nothing.
Pradhan and Parvati give one of their rooms in their apartment on rent, where a Bollywood actress named Sujata comes to stay. She is dating politician Gajanan’s son Vilas. Meanwhile they get a call to collect Ajay’s ashes and some home items like TV, Refrigerator, etc. from the customs. Pradhan goes to collect them and is humiliated and ill-treated. He storms into the head of custom’s office and demands that he merely wants his son’s ashes and he will leave. Feeling sympathy for him, the officer gives him the ashes and promises the rest of the items to be
delivered ASAP. Parvati takes the ashes into the ganga and a pundit tells her that her son will be reincarnated soon as a baby nearby. Meanwhile Pradhan tries to kill himself by jumping in front of a car but is unsuccessful. He and Parvati then decide to kill themselves by consuming poison soon. Meanwhile Sujata finds out that she is pregnant but Vilas is too scared of his father and wouldn’t marry her. When Gajanan finds out about the baby, he is adamant that she abort the baby. Pradhan then decides to help Sujata and takes care of her. Gajanan starts to harass Pradhan by cutting off the house electricity, sending goons to blackmail him. He even bribes the gynecologist to do an abortion on Sujata. Meanwhile Parvati thinks that the baby in Sujata’s womb is Ajay. Pradhan finally tells Vilas and Sujata to leave the city and go far away but Parvati refuses to let them go. Ultimately the couple leaves and Pradhan and Parvati spend their days in peace and in the memory of their son. The film is directed by Mahesh Bhatt and produced by Tarachand Barjatya. The star cast includes Anupam Kher, Rohini Hatangadi, Soni Razdan, Madan Jain, Sulhas, Bhalekar and Nilu Phule.
