Nehlata is a happy-go-lucky girl and enjoys life until one Night she has a horrific care accident and receives severe injuries to her head. She is hospitalized but lose her memory and doesn’t recognize her own parents. She starts behaving like a child and gets treatment. One day things take a turn for the worse when she is kidnapped from hospital and sold to a brothel and renamed Rashmi. There she meets Somu, who is forced by his friends to visit the place. He realizes that Rashmi is not well and needs care. So he takes her to his house and begins to take care of her. Soon Somu and Rashmi become close friends and cannot do without each other. Meanwhile her parents put out ads in the newspaper looking for her whereabouts. A man recognizes her while Somu and she is travelling in the train and give them leads. Soon the cops come looking for her in his house while they are away and finally locate her and take her to her parents. Nehalata by now  has regained her memory with the doctors treatment and forgets all about the time she spent with Somu. He comes to know about her departure and chases the train she is travelling in but she fails to recognize him. Somu is left alone and heartbroken. The film is directed by Balu Mahendra and produced by N C Sippy and Raj N Sippy. The music is composed by Ilaiyaraaja. The star cast includes Kamal Hasan, Sridevi, Gulshan Grover and Leela Mishra.
