Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam is produced by Guru Dutt and directed by Abrar Alvi, a film released in 1962 is based on the Bengali novel called the Saheb Bibi Golam by Bimal Mitra and is a story of the tragic fall of the haveli dom and feudalism during the British rule in Bengal. The title of the film is the reference to the relationship between the neglected wife (Bibi) of Sahib (aristocratic employer) and the loyal Ghulam (Part time servant), where in the Bibi has a platonic relationship with the Ghulam who brings happiness into her lonely life. Music is by Hemant Kumar with the lyrics by Shakeel Badayuni . The film is noted for its beautiful songs and also the brilliant cinematography by V. K. Murthy.
Starring in the film are Guru Dutt, Meena Kumari , Rehman, Waheeda Rehman and Nazir Hussain. The film was chosen as India’s Official entry to the Oscars and also nominated for the 13th Berlin International Film Festival.
