The story of the movie revolves around a woman who is a courtesan and well respected. People call her by the name of Sardari Begum. One day when the country is torn by Hindu, Muslim riots, an unexpected incident changes the course of history. Sardari begum who is out and about gets caught in the vicious riots and accidentally a stone hits her head. She dies instantly. Cops and journalists are sent to cover the incident. One investigative reporter in particular is interested in her life that she lived before her death. She ends up documenting her life, struggles and what all went into the making of the well-known Sardari Begum.
The movie is directed by Shyam Benegal and produced by Amit Khanna and Shyam Benegal. The music is composed by Vanraj Bhatia and the lyrics are written by Javed Akhtar. The story and screenplay is written by Khalid Mohammed. The star cast includes Amrish Puri,Rajit Kapoor,Ahmed Khan, Kirron Kher,Smriti Mishra, S M Zaheer,Salim Ghause and Shree Vallabh Vyas.
