Saudagar has been directed by Sudhendu Roy, produced by Subhash Ghai & Tarachand Barjatya, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Nutan, Padma Khanna.
The movie is about making Gur (is also called the Jaggery unrefined concentrated cane sugar). Moti (Amitabh Bachchan) is a trader, who sells this gur during its season made of Date Nectar and is earning well as his gur is very popular in the market. When the off season begins there is no work for Moti who meets Phoolbanu (Padma Khanna) and falls in love with her and proposes to her. Her father refuses the proposal demanding a dowry ( Mehar) which he is unable to afford. He returns dejected and continues with his work.
Majubee (Nutan) a widow, is his business associate who makes the Jaggery for him and people come from near and far to buy it from them and his jaggery is very famous in the market. Moti has a cunning plan and decides to marry Majubee but she is unaware of his scheming plans. She agrees to marry him.She continues to make the jaggery(Gur) for him and he starts earning well. He saves enough to go and propose to his lady love once again with the dowry.. He divorces Majubee and takes the money to phoolbano’ s father. Both of them get married and he brings Bano home. Majubee and the villagers are shocked at this move of his. Moti is in for a rude shock when he realises that Phoolbano does not know how to make the gur and he incurs a huge loss.
Meanwhile a dejected Majubee gets married to a man who has two kids. Moti has no other option left to save himself and comes to Majubee with two cans of Date Nectar pleading to her to make gur for him once again. She refuses but feels bad to see him in this state so agrees to help him out.. Phoolbanu and Majubee hug each other with Majubee forgiving Moti.
