Nawab Yusuf is a widower taking care of his son Shahnawaz and brother Aslam. Aslam however falls into wrong habits and begins frequenting brothels. There he meets and falls in love with a courtesan named Pheroza. Yusuf is furious at him and arranges his marriage to the maulvis’s daughter Shama. Aslam on the wedding day however elopes and marries Pheroza. The maulvi dies of shock leaving Shama and his wife to fend for themselves. Yusuf’s uncle then urges him to marry Shama instead, and he agrees. After the marriage she urges Yusuf to bring Shahnawaz into the household as well and they all live like a happy family until tragedy strikes with a death in the family. The film is directed by Nalem Bhatt and produced by H K Khan and E R D'souza. The music is composed by Usha Khanna. The star cast includes Girish Karnad, Shabana Azmi, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Kader Khan and Aurna Irani.
