Silsila a 1981 romantic film directed by Yash Chopra. Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Rekha, Sanjeev Kumar, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Shashi Kapoor as a supporting guest appearance. The film was a superhit for two reasons , one was with the best of multi star cast and the story is believed to be a real-life love triangle of three famous stars. This was also the last film featuring the popular star pair Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha.
Story of two brothers and their love story. Shekhar Malhotra(Shashi Kapoor) a Squadron Leader with the Indian Air Force falls in love with Shobha(Jaya Bachchan) while Amit Malhotra (Amitabh Bachchan) an emerging writer is in love with Chandni(Rekha). They share a blissful courtship when tragedy strikes and Shekhar Malhotra gets killed in an Indian Airforce Aircraft leaving a pregnant Shobha out of wedlock. Amit marries Shobha to save her the embarrassment of her unwed pregnancy and out of pity and breaks of his relationship with Chandni, leaving her heartbroken. Tragedy strikes once again when Shobha loses her child (Shekhar’s Child).
Chandni and Amit accidentally meet up again and realizes he still loves her and decides he can no longer continue a loveless relationship with Shobha as there is no binding factor in their life.
Chandni is married to Dr. Anand(Sanjeev Kumar) a happy jovial man. The couple meet on Holi celebrations and the spouse here Shobha and Dr. Anand notice the closeness between Chandni and Amit. They start meeting clandestinely and also end up in a police scuffle. Shobha’s cousin (essayed by Khulbushan Kharbanda) wants to expose their illicit relationship while Shoba is aware of her husband’s affair with Chandni and so does Dr. Anand who is aware of his wife’s extra marital affair but is in love with her. Chandni and Amit decide they want to elope and get away from their respective marriage and be together. On the day they decide to start their life together, they hear of the air crash of the plane in which Dr. Anand is travelling. They both rush to the spot to help him out and that’s when Chandni realizes she is in love with her husband Dr. Anand and not with Amit any more. Dr. Anand is rescued and the two unite together.
Shobha on the other hand is shattered when she hears of his decision to leave but has not lost hope as she has started loving him immensely, him. Amit returns home to her and the film ends with Amit and Shobha living a happy married life and she is again pregnant with Amit’s child this time. The film is on faith and love that stays on forever.
