“Star” is a Tamil romantic drama coming-of-age movie directed by Elan. Starring Kavin Raj, M. P. Michael, and Aaditi Pohankar, the film is about a young man who aspires to become an actor in spite of numerous setbacks.
“Kalai” (Kavin) wishes to be hugely successful in the movie world. Right from childhood, he admires film stars and wants to find himself among them. But his path is also fraught with obstacles: rejection, self-doubt, and proving himself. His father (Lal) reassures him but worries about his failure as well. Despite numerous setbacks, Kalai never loses hope, overworking himself to achieve his dream.
Along the way, he experiences love, loss, and defeat. The story chronicles his sacrifices and tribulations in a line of work where success is short-lived and unattainable. Will Kalai survive the ordeal and fulfill his life-long ambition, or will he be forced to drop his dream?
“Star” is not earth-shattering, but it manages to do an interesting and real drama. The film has individuals taking an interest in what occurs with Kalai and hence become willing to support him. Kavin gives a fair performance, coupling ambition with vulnerability seamlessly. How he performs along with his father on screen contributes emotional complexity in the story.
The film wishes to be a box-office entertainer as well as a motivational story of chasing dreams. Though some parts appear stretched, “Star” manages to keep one engaged with comedy, tear-jerking scenes, and an uplifting message. It oozes determination, and therefore is an identifiable and motivating experience for anybody who has ever fantasized about following something.
