Sultan Ali Khan, played by Salman Khan is a champion wrestler but has decided to get retired early and give up wrestling. The owner of a mixed martial arts league, Aakash, played by Amit Sadh takes his fathers advice and asks Sultan to participate in the tournaments to save the league. On repeatedly refusing, Aakash learns of the reason of his refusal by digging in his past through Sultan’s friend Govind.
Sultan, while in college happens to meet a girl Aarfa, played by Anushka Sharma, who’s a state-level wrestler. He instantly falls in love with her. After initial hesitation, she talks to him and they both become friends. However one day Aarfa overhears Sultan boasting to his friends that they are dating and this infuriates her. She insults Sultan in front of all his friends and tells him she would only accept a well-trained wrestler and leaves.
That incident leaves a mark on Sultan’s mind and he vows to work hard and be the best wrestler in the country. He trains hard and ultimately wins the state level-wrestling match. This impresses Aarfa and they both get married. They represent India in many international arenas. Just when they get the news of being selected for the Olympic Contingent, Aarfa finds out she’s pregnant. She has to crush her dream of wining gold for her country but Sultan decides to fulfill that dream.
Sultan gets so engrossed in his training that he becomes arrogant to the media and does not even visit Aarfa on her day of delivering their baby. He finds on returning that their baby boy died due to severe anemia and Sultan’s O- blood donation could have saved him. A depressed and angry Aarfa leaves Sultan. Presently he tries to gather money to built a blood donation bank for the underprivileged and Aakash asks him to use the winning tournament money to fulfill his dream. Finally Sultan trains and wins the tournament and Aarfa comes back to him and they have a baby girl. Sultan is directed by Ali Abbas Zafar and produced by Aditya Chopra.
