Shivshankar Shastri is a well read and acclaimed musician who has immense knowledge on Hindustani classical music. He is also known to have played music for the former Mughal emperors of his time. Apart from this known side of his, Shastri also has a dark side, where he is helplessly in love with a woman named Tulsi, who is not only from a lower caste but is also of questionable character. He however is unable to express his feelings towards her. Meanwhile a young man named Kanneshwar falls for Shastri’s daughter and asks for her hand in marriage, but the latter refuses.

Shatri becomes increasingly aloof and distant from people and becomes the subject of mockery and humiliation among the young and old in his community. His behavior gets the better of him and he is unable to connect with anyone and thus not able to get a secure and decent job. The film is directed by K Vishwanath and produced by V Ramesh. The music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal and the story is written by K Viswanath. The star cast includes Girish Karnad, Sachin, Jayaprada, Sadhana Singh, Devan Verma, Paintal, Dina Pathak, Asrani, Bharati Acharekar and Tabassum.
